European Economic and Monetary Union
FAPIG No. 150 pp. 4〜11 (1998)

In early 1999, 11 EU countries will take part in the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) that will lead to the introduction of the single メeuroモ currency. After January 1999, monetary and exchange rate policies of the participating countries will be unified. As fiscal policy remains the responsibility of the member states, the メStability and Growth Pactモ has been prepared to enforce sound fiscal management. EMU will increase the transparency and efficiency of the financial markets and the EU economy, and this will reinforce the presence of the euro as an international currency. On the other hand, EU countries will lose interest and exchange rates as adjustment mechanisms. Thus, member countries will depend on other adjustment mechanisms, particularly the labour markets and fiscal policy, which are likely to speed up structural reform and greater political cooperation in the EU. KEYWORDS : EMU, EU, euro, monetary policy, exchange rate policy, fiscal policy, Stability and Growth Pact, international currency, adjustment mechanisms, structural reform

Memories of San Diego
FAPIG No. 150 pp. 12〜18 (1998)

The future of ITER is uncertain as of the end of September, 1998. The six-year engineering design of ITER, which is the tokamak-type fusion experimental reactor project by the four parties from Japan, United States, Europe, and Russia, was completed this July. ITER has found itself at the critical moment; can it go forward or will it result in an illusion? I was engaged in the design activities of ITER for three years at San Diego Joint Work Site as a member of the Joint Central Team. In this essay I will introduce things I experienced and personal impressions during this period in respects of work and daily life.

Development of Superconducting Bus-Lines
FAPIG No.150 pp. 19〜22 (1998)

We have fabricated and installed nine superconducting bus-lines as current feeders of a Large Helical Device, LHD. The bus-line with mean length of 55 m consists of a superconductor and its cryogenic flexible transfer-line. The conductor is an aluminum stabilized NbTi/Cu compacted strand cable, developed to satisfy rated current of DC32kA. The transfer-line consists of five corrugated tubes assembled coaxially. Such bus-lines are smaller in cross-sectional area than metal bars. Flexible bus-lines save on-site installation time because they can be assembled at the factory. After installation, bus-lines were cooled down and excited successfully without troubles during the first experimental period. It shows the stability and the usefulness of superconducting bus-lines for the fusion device.

Radioactive Waste Treatment in Nuclear Fuel Cyde
FAPIG No.150 pp. 23〜31 (1998)

Radioactive waste management in nuclear fuel cycle is the very important subjects. There are many kinds of radwastes arising from nuclear fuel manufacturing , spent fuel reprocessing and others. These wastes have not only beta-gamma activity but also alpha activity. One of the object of waste treatment is to make a stable solid material to meet the requirement of ultimate disposal in land. This report include waste treatment on volume reduction and stabilization by high-temperature melting systems and alpha-contaminants removing process etc.. In addition to the above technical explanation, developmental works on backend cycle of the United Kingdom and France are reviewed.

KEYWORDS : radioactive waste management, nuclear fuel cycle, spent fuel reprocessing, ultimate disposal, high temperature melting process, alpha contamination, decontami-nation, needs and seeds matrix

Numerical Analysis of the Performance of Steam Reformer connected with HTGR
FAPIG No. 150 pp. 32〜37 (1998)

The performance of the commercialized steam reforming system using nuclear heat from HTGR was numerically analysed with various process conditions. Numerical analysis was conducted by finite difference/incremental method for unidimensional model of reformer tube with solving heat transfer equation between helium gas and feed gas which connected with chemical reaction equation by reaction heat. As a result, the relationship between the performance indexes, such as methane conversion ratio and hydrogen produce rate, and process conditions of temperature, pressure, flow rate and steam/carbon ratio were quantitatively obtained.

KEYWORDS : steam reforming system, HTGR, methane conversion ratio, hydrogen produce rate

Prospect of Third-Party Logistics Service in Japan
FAPIG No. 150 pp. 38〜44 (1988)

Recently, as a new trend of business logistics, Third-Party Logistics Service, which is developed in Europe and the USA, is drawing attention in Japan. The text exPLains the essence of Third-Party Logistics Service and provides a study for the possibility of future development of Third-Party Logistics Service in Japan. Through this study, it gives indication for future state of Japanese business logistics.

KEYWORDS : Third-Party Logistics Service, business process review (business process re-engineering) total optimization
KEYWORDS : ITER, Joint Central Team, San Diego, La Jolla
