My First Stay in Provence in the South of France
FAPIG No. 175 pp.3〜17 (2007)

According to the established agreement on the construction of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in France, many engineers of the participant countries of the ITER project have left for their new assignments to the Cadarache work site since the middle of 2006. This paper reports on an overseas life, which has been experienced by the author for the first time, over a long period of time from last November with a focus on personal experience and impressions. With an introduction of the work site of the CEA research center of Cadarache, the place of residence Aix-en-Provence and the region of Provence where they are situated, there are described the environments and troubles in daily life, a wall of foreign language, and the pleasures of weekends.

Development of High-Frequency Induction Melting System
for Radioactive Waste Disposal
FAPIG No. 175 pp.18〜22 (2007)

The amount of low level radioactive solid waste is expected to increase because of dismantling of nuclear power plants and nuclear science research facilities. But disposal area for radioactive waste is limited, therefore it's important to reduce waste volume as low as possible.
Kawasaki Plant Systems, Ltd. has developed melting techniques for waste volume reduction. This is a high-frequency induction melting system using a nonconductive canister and AI-ring. This melting system can dispose low level radioactive waste of high efficiency and safety.

Work of Plant Data Acquisition System for "MONJU"
FAPIG No. 175 pp.23〜28 (2007)

The fast breeder reactor "MONJU" (hereafter "MONJU") is equipped with the system called "MONJU Integrated Data Acquisition System (MIDAS)" to effectively acquire, accumulate and analyze relevant real-plant process data gathered from the system start-up test.
At present, "MONJU" has been suspended due to a sodium leak accident that occurred in 1995. However, the main part of remodeling construction to prevent sodium leaks was completed in May, 2007 and "MONJU" is highly expected to resume its operations, stepping into the practical testing phase. In this situation, "MIDAS" has been replaced with an upgraded version before the system start-up test was resumed. This paper describes overview of the new "MIDAS" system.

Development of Superconducting Motor with YBCO High Temperature Superconducting Tapes
FAPIG No. 175 pp.30〜35 (2007)

Fuji Electric developed a 15kW synchronous motor with a fixed YBCO superconducting field winding. The motor was tested actually in the water with a propeller for underwater propulsion attached. This development of the superconducting motor that uses the YBCO superconducting tapes was the first prototype developed in Japan. The motor was capable to output the highest power in the world at the time. (The highest power motor had been a 5.6kW motor, which was made, by IGC Super Power, Inc. and Rockwell Automation, Inc. in U.S.A. in 2005.) This paper introduces an outline from basic design to completion of the motor including various verification tests and the performance test.

Radiation Monitoring System
FAPIG No. 175 pp.36〜41 (2007)

This radiation monitoring system is designed to perform 24-hour monitoring every day the radiation condition of working environments within such facilities and the radioactive concentration of gases and liquids emitted out of the facilities. It is a very important system.
Fuji Electric systems Co., Ltd. has radiation monitoring system that intensifies peculiar radiation measuring functions of radiation detectors by providing them with intelligent capacity, and that uses a computer system for the control of data processing and data transmission to the control unit.
